Start-ups do not begin in a vacuum. A robust ecosystem and the support of a network of like-minded people and companies is required to get them off the ground and keep them in the air. This network was out in force at the “Golden Egg” – the Charles K. Kao auditorium at Hong Kong Science and Technology Park – for the Healthy Ageing semi-pitch event, the fifth in the Jumpstarter 2017 series.
As with the four preceding semi-pitch events, the judges heard 12 quick pitches, this time from start-ups exploring innovative solutions for an ageing population. Once again, three winners were chosen to proceed to November’s final round and two other awards were handed out. But it was the size and engagement of the audience that made this event unique.
Before and after the pitches were made, the participants and the audience – members of a lively and thriving network of healthcare providers, researchers and professionals – came together to mix and mingle, compare notes and observations, and congratulate or offer condolences.
When the goal is to develop solutions that will help ourselves and our family members age comfortably and with dignity, everyone has a stake in making these ideas successful. This spirit underpinned the expressions of support and encouragement that were overheard in every corner of the venue, and the universal applause that erupted when the winners were announced.
Proceeding to the final were three start-ups: Human Washer Ltd.’s “Sit & Shower” solution which “returns bathing independence and dignity to seniors and the mobility impaired” by reducing bathroom accidents – the leading cause of falls and injuries in seniors
Supported by the network that nurtured them, the three finalists will now head to November’s final pitch event at the HKCEC where the three winning teams will each receive up to USD one million in investment commitment from Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund.
